Problem
How can I keep my content design skills fresh?
Solution
I practice designing clear, concise, and empathetic microcopy to encourage users to engage in actionable solutions in any scenario.

Challenge
Pitch airline WingScanner's new app feature, which allows customers to skip long security lines.

Solution
I rewrote the original copy in a tone that avoids confirshaming and encourages users to purchase WingPass during checkout.
The bulleted list of benefits makes the text scannable and the concise CTAs offer more clarity.
Challenge
Pitch product management app Ollert's new feature, which offers a login link instead of a password.

Solution
I used a question in the header to engage users and trimmed the copy to concisely explain SinglePass. The secondary CTA is an alternative to SinglePass.

Challenge
In 100 characters, use communications hub GuerillaBox's brand voice (plainspoken, genuine, and bit quirky with subtle, dry humor) to design common error messages for these scenarios:
-
invalid email/username/password
-
email/username already exists
-
upgrade for more space

Solution
I designed the error messages with:
-
concise error explanations,
-
helper text and tooltips to prevent errors,
-
actionable solutions, and
-
familiar symbols and colors ('correct' = green, ✓; 'incorrect' = red, x, âš
Challenge
Present online ACT practice test instructions to students.

Solution
Large chunks of text can be overwhelming, especially for a stressed test-taker.

To reduce cognitive load, I:
-
arranged the copy into two major sections in order of priority;
-
added spacing, images, and bullets to break up the text for easier scannability;
-
removed repetitions;
-
used a more delicate tone; and
-
designed clearly-visible CTAs.

Challenge + Solution
I used language learning app Lingual's magical, playful, positive, and encouraging brand voice to design for five unique scenarios:

-
earning a Word Wizard badge for adding 500 new words to a word bank
-
trying to exit in the middle of a lesson
-
choosing to unfollow a fellow learner
-
losing internet connection
-
meeting the daily word bank goal

Each scenario contains
-
a header and body copy that clearly informs the user of their situation and
-
problem-solving CTAs.

Challenge
Design an airline app message to notify a user of
-
their flight cancellation,
-
the cause, and
-
what they can do next.

Solution
I used empathy to clearly express the issue and how the user can solve it.
There are two CTAs to accommodate all users:
-
those who feel comfortable rebooking independently, and
-
those with questions or in need of support.

Challenge + Solution
I designed a modal to announce a new feature for scheduling software: automated follow-up emails.
It includes:
-
the feature's benefits and
-
CTAs to get started and learn about the feature.
Challenge + Solution
I designed a promotional screen for an app that lets busy sports fans track their favorite teams.

I wrote a question as the header to engage users and highlighted the app's benefits to motivate users to download it.

Challenge + Solution
I designed a promotional ad for a grocery delivery subscription service.

I wrote the body copy as an extension of the header to highlight the subscription details.
I added the free 30-day trial so users can familiarize themselves with the service and experience its value before ideally deciding to purchase it.
Challenge + Solution
I designed a first-use empty state screen for a link management tool that lets users store their QR codes.
It includes:
-
the definition and benefit of QR codes,
-
what this page will contain in the future, and
-
a CTA to create the first QR code.

Challenge
Design a multi-step form that collects user data to help customize their website creation experience.

Solution
I designed and wrote an onboarding form that adheres to UX and microcopy best practices:
-
clear, concise, and conversational copy;
-
identifiable product benefits; and
-
progress bars to promote transparency and user engagement.
